Theyyam is a blend of two words: “Deivam” (meaning God) and “Aattam” (which translates to dance). It is performed to honor heroes, ancestral spirits, and local deities.
This ancient tribal dance form dates back to the Dravidian age and is deeply embedded in Kerala’s cultural heritage.
The festival takes place annually between December and April.
At the Parassini Kadava Sri Muthappan Temple in Kannur, Theyyam is performed daily.
Theyyam incorporates dance, music, and mime.
Each Theyyam form has its unique style, makeup, costumes, and choreography.
Some prominent Theyyams include Pottan, Gulikan, Bhagavati, Kari Chamundi, and Raktha Chamundi.
The ornamental decorations, size, and appearance of the performers are worth noticing.
